SWIMMING
AGAINST
THE TIDE

Peter Gray & Michael Charleston

Price: Hardback (with dust jacket) £29.00 PUBLICATION Summer 2011

Swimming Against the Tide is a story of salmon conservation success against all odds. It details the pioneering hatchery work of Peter Gray at Kielder and his great achievements in dramatically improving the stocks of salmon on the Tyne - to the extent that it is now, once again, a world class salmon river.

'My main motive is to offer hope to the host of people on both sides of the North Atlantic who desperately want to restore the fortunes of their depleted salmon rivers. Those who have seen the way the Tyne came back from the dead already want to folow its example but there are many others who should be told how it was done.'

I have spent over 50yrs in FISHERIES CONSERVATION, and have specialised in the NORTH ATLANTIC SALMON.

Since the creation of the Kielder Salmon Hatchery in 1978 until 2005, I was responsible as manager for setting up the successful Salmon Restocking Programme on the River Tyne.
This Salmon Restocking programme has resulted in the best recovery of any Salmon River in the U.K.and EUROPE.

I have given presentations all over SCOTLAND, ENGLAND, WALES, NORTHERN IRELAND and ICELAND and was invited to do a workshop and presentation in ICELAND by ORRI VIGFUSSON, which was attended by all the hatchery managers in ICELAND.

My presentations have been given to FISHERIES BOARDS, SALMON TRUSTS, ANGLING CLUBS and RIVER IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATIONS and I also give private consultations.

When I was manager of the Kielder Hatchery I gave on site presentations to over 27,000 visitors to the hatchery. I have been giving presentations on HATCHERIES, RESTOCKING, and SALMON CONSERVATION for over 30yrs and have often been described as the leader in the field of Salmon Conservation,

Kielder Hatchery has been classed as the " best in the U.K.and EUROPE"
